Meet Graham – Theatre Manager & Assistant to the Executive Director

How long have you worked for Scarborough YMCA? I have been a member of staff at Scarborough YMCA since May 1984, firstly as a part-time member of staff, then as Assistant to the General Secretary and Theatre Manager, and now in my current role as Theatre Manager & Assistant to the Executive Director. However I got involved as a member/volunteer in February 1982.

What do you like most about working here? The things I most like about working at the YMCA are the people. I get great satisfaction from seeing happy people, especially young people. It’s a very rewarding role helping young people grow and learn invaluable life skills, heart-warming in fact. It is also nice when they come back and thank me for things I did and helped them with. It’s such a fantastic feeling to know you’ve helped so many people. I love helping others, it’s a great thing to give. I’ve made many true friends over the years through the YMCA.

What did you do before you came to work here? Before I came to the YMCA I was a pupil at Graham School where I was involved in many of the school productions presented there. I also helped at Wheatcroft School with props, lighting, sound and scenery for their school shows, this was on a placement from Graham School when I was 13. It was great helping younger children of primary school age. I was also involved with a local cub/scout group. I also worked in a hotel as a pot washer and cleaner to earn some money. I was also appearing in shows put on by YMCA Productions and Scarborough and District Light Opera Society. As well as all this I was volunteering at the YMCA helping to build the theatre in North Street, being a fly man/stage crew, operating sound and lighting at the Royal Opera House Scarborough and at The Brig in Filey, both these venues are sadly gone now!

Where else have you lived, apart from Scarborough? I’m Scarborough born and bred and very proud of my hometown.

What do you like to do in your spare time? In my spare time, which is very limited, I like to socialise with family and friends and travel in the UK or abroad.

Do you have any pets? We have a family pet. A Golden Retriever named Poppy.

Your favourite holiday destination? My favourite holiday destination is boating on the Norfolk Broads, I also like to relax by the pool in warmer climates.

Do you have a ‘claim to fame’? My claim to fame is to have known the numerous young people from Scarborough whom have passed through the YMCA doors and now have fantastic jobs either in the theatre industry or other areas of employment. I’m very proud to have had some influence on their lives. These people are all stars in my eyes.

The place you would most like to visit (and why)? I would love to visit Egypt to see the pyramids and all the amazing Egyptian artefacts. I think it looks an amazing place and it fascinates me how and why it was created.
